Life Beyond Work - The Wider Region

Hastings and Bexhill are close to a wealth of fascinating places to visit, whatever your interests.
They are surrounding by outstanding countryside, much of it protected woodland and Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The vast, unspoilt spaces will satisfy the most intrepid of walkers. And to the south is the sea.
Nearby are:
- Rye - the picturesque old port town with a maze of cobbled streets and a rich blend of antique shops, restaurants and art galleries.
- Herstmonceux Castle - set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens and embodying Medieval England and Renaissance Europe. It’s also home to the fascinating Observatory Science Centre, providing fun and education for all ages.
- Pevensey - one of the south east’s best places for windsurfing and water sports and home to Pevensey Castle, built by William of Normandy on the walls of an even older Roman fortress.
- Bodiam Castle - built in 1385 and one of the most famous medieval British fortresses. The exterior is still virtually complete, with ramparts rising dramatically above the moat.
- Battle - the charming market town with its historic Abbey, commissioned by William of Normandy.
- Bedgebury Pinetum - over 10,000 trees in 320 acres including rare and endangered specimens and some of the oldest conifers in Britain.
- Bewl Water reservoir - the largest stretch of open water in the south east. It’s host to a huge variety of wildlife and offers windsurfing, fishing, cycling and walking plus a fascinating exhibition.
On a wider scale, Eastbourne is close by, Brighton and Tunbridge Wells are under an hour away and London two hours by road or rail. And if you want to escape further afield, Hastings has good links to Gatwick Airport, Ashford (with its Eurostar station) and Dover.
