Plans for Priory Square Approved

Plans for a public square as part of the next phase of the development of Priory Quarter in Hastings town centre were approved on 17 January 2008.

Priory Square will open out from the new walkway linking Priory Street and Havelock Road, just south of the new Lacuna Place office development being created.

Work on the square, to include trees and outdoor seating, will begin in Spring 2008 and is due to be completed by winter 2008/9. Retail units on the ground floor of Lacuna Place are being marketed to restaurant and café operators so that the square will make an interesting, attractive place for people to relax or meet friends or colleagues for lunch or a coffee.

The proposals from architects Proctor Matthews were recently presented to local businesses, councillors and residents' groups who were involved in the public consultation exercises in 2005 and 2006 when the Priory Quarter 'urban design framework' was first created. The exhibition held in Priory Meadow at the time revealed that 82% of the public were in favour of the overall proposals for Priory Quarter and 87% supported the proposed public spaces.
