Sussex Arms Junction Update
The new traffic light system and pedestrian crossings at the Sussex Arms Junction between Priory Road, Old London Road, Mount Road and Frederick Road will undergo final changes from next week before becoming operational.
The lights were commissioned several weeks ago but the first day in service showed that the sequencing did not work as planned, causing congestion. The traffic lights have been temporarily out of action while improvements were worked on. Sea Space's engineers have worked with East Sussex County Council on a new phasing plan and some changes to the junction design.
Sea Space’s engineers will carry out further work on the junction from 8th July. The works include new and amended line markings, additional signage, signal cable conduits and reprogramming the signals; the works are scheduled to take two weeks.
“Working closely with the county council, we made temporary improvements to the junction with pedestrian crossing islands and a crossing patrol supervisor was on duty during school hours, but we appreciate this has been a difficult time and we’d like to thank local residents for their patience,” says Abigail Gilbert, spokeswoman for Sea Space. “The junction will provide a better balance between vehicles and pedestrians using the junction and make the junction a much safer place for pedestrians to cross.”
