Construction starts of new University Centre Hastings facility
The creation of a second set of premises for the University of Brighton’s University Centre Hastings (UCH) has taken a major step forward: site demolition has been completed and construction has begun. This marks a significant milestone for higher education in the area, with the new facility scheduled to be ready for the start of the September 2011 academic year.

Heringtons move into One Priory Square
Hastings’ Priory Quarter business district has welcomed its latest office tenant: Heringtons Solicitors. Heringtons are the first business to take space on the new flexible terms on offer.
Heringtons are an East Sussex law firm, with offices in Eastbourne, Battle and Rye. They have particular expertise in supporting both individuals and small and medium enterprises and owner-managed firms, providing a comprehensive legal service built on local knowledge and professional expertise.
One Priory Square stands in a new public space as an imposing, six-floor contemporary building, next to the Lacuna Place offices in Priory Quarter in Hastings town centre. Office suites are available for a simple licence free which includes rent, service charge, rates, cleaning and light, heat and power. Licences give companies the flexibility to move and expand that is not possible with traditional long leases.

Demolition of Post Office extension to start
Work is due to start next week at the Post Office building in Hastings town centre to demolish the rear extension to allow for construction work to turn the building into additional premises for the University of Brighton at University Centre Hastings (UCH).
Sea Space’s demolition contractors will start work in the week commencing 1st February and the work is expected to take 15 weeks to complete.

Planning consent has been granted to refurbish and extend the Post Office building in Hastings town centre to turn the building into additional premises for the University of Brighton at University Centre Hastings (UCH).

Plans to upgrade A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury announced
Plans for a £125m scheme to upgrade the A21 to dual carriageway between Tonbridge and Pembury have been published by the Highways Agency. This scheme aims to reduce travel delays and increase safety for tens of thousands of drivers and local residents.
Some 40,000 vehicles use the A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury every day, leading to increased congestion in recent years.
The Highways Agency wants to widen the A21 in both directions and increase visibility on the road. The improvements will provide better access to Tunbridge Wells and include a new flyover linking the A21 to local businesses and Pembury Hospital. Journey times to Hastings via the A21 will also be reduced.

University Centre Hastings awarded extra places
University Centre Hastings (UCH) has received a significant boost by being awarded with 85 additional places from university funding body, HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England). This is nearly 10 per cent of the total national allocation of 900 places for all universities in England. It reflects the success of the university, which opened in 2003, has had on its students and the wider regeneration of the town.

Pan-European group comes to Hastings to tackle climate change
A European-wide delegation is visiting Hastings this week to discuss measures to tackle climate change. The ‘Future Cities’ group has visited the South Queensway Enviro21 Park, a sustainable business development in north-west Hastings, and is leading a summit of environmental experts and local businesses.
The EU-funded Future Cities project aims to help towns in north-west Europe manage the effects of global warming by adapting fundamental urban structures including water systems, energy use and green spaces.
Led by German water board Lippeverband, the Future Cities team includes Hastings Borough Council, Sea Space and the South East Partnership Board - plus other organisations from Germany, France, The Netherlands and Belgium.
