Plans for Priory Square Unveiled

A planning application for a public square, the next phase of the development of Priory Quarter in Hastings town centre, has been submitted by Sea Space, the local economic development company.

The plans show the new Priory Square at the south end of Priory Street, next to the new Lacuna Place offices (currently under construction) and behind the Post Office.

"The square would include a large water feature, seating and trees. It will be a small, appealing, outdoor public space within Priory Quarter, opening out from the new walkway that will run through Lacuna Place, linking Havelock Road and Priory Street"

said Abigail Gilbert, Communications Officer at Sea Space.

"We are marketing the retail units on the ground floor of Lacuna Place to restaurant and café operators, so the plans allow for outdoor seating in the square, under a veranda or 'loggia'. "

The square also allows better access from Havelock Road through Lacuna Place to Priory Street, particularly for wheelchair users.

The proposals from architects Proctor Matthews were recently presented to local businesses, councillors and residents' groups which were involved in the public consultation exercises in 2005 and 2006 when the Priory Quarter 'urban design framework' was first created. The exhibition held in Priory Meadow at the time revealed that 82% of the public were in favour of the overall proposals for Priory Quarter and 87% supported the proposed public spaces.

Abigail adds:

"Future phases of Priory Quarter will see more offices, education and leisure venues. We want to create a thriving town centre district that's bustling with local people, businesses, students and visitors. Priory Square is an important part of this. It will provide an interesting, attractive place for people to relax or meet friends or colleagues for lunch or a coffee."
